The first thing I tell new students when they arrive at the PCH shack in Laguna Beach for their lesson is, “I can’t teach you to be a surfer, you will experience surfing today. Surfing can take months to progress”. So what does this have to do with The Myth About Learning to Surf?
Is surfing for everybody? Yes.
Surfing has an individual vibration or attitude for each new surfer. Some surfers can mimic the instincts of the Momentum surfers like Kelly Slater and Rob Machado. Others are born watermen and can charge the biggest sets after a few hours. But, for the average person, it may take years to connect with the ocean on your own terms. That can be discouraging or a blessing!
Surfing is never about the end result. Unless you lie to yourself and buy in to The Myth About Learning to Surf.
So don’t expect to be buying a board the next day and becoming a local at the local surf shop after a couple lessons, because there are more secrets to this sport.
